Children Hybrid Integration: Learning Dialogue as a way of Upgrading policies of Participation
The CHILD-UP project focuses on mapping and overcoming integration challenges for migrant children. The project researches different levels of integration of migrant children in Europe with the primary aim of proposing an innovative approach to improve their social condition and to disseminate the project outcomes by involving relevant national and international stakeholders.
Project duration: January 2019 – January 2022
CHILD-UP researches the social conditions of migrant children’s integration through social participation with the final aim to propose an innovative approach to understand and transform the conditions of social and personal life of migrant children (4–16) and their level of well-being and integration. Concerning the specific challenge requested by this framework, CHILD-UP aims to analyse and support children’s active participation in choosing the ways in which they will integrate, thus avoiding a concept of integration as passive assimilation or simple adaptation to the existing socio-cultural context.

Objectives
- Providing a European overview, collection of data and evaluation concerning children’s conditions of living, protection and education.
- Providing support for migrant children’s exercise of agency in changing their own conditions of integration and constructing hybrid identities.
- Informing policies at the local, national and European level through dissemination and exploitation of research outcomes and tools.
Actions
The scope is addressed through the following actions:
- Background research on migrant children’s condition of integration in Europe and in the seven countries involved in the fieldwork.
- Quantitative research about problems and opportunities of social protection on the local schools, protection services, educational and mediation agencies, families and community life.
- Qualitative research on relevant examples of participatory approach in schools and on the perspectives of professionals and children.
- Evaluative research on relevant examples of dialogic practices.
- Adoption of generalised gender-sensitive approach to research and intervention.
- Construction of tools that can be applied in the education systems in Europe.
- Construction of website and e-platform
- Involvement of local and international stakeholders
